Selena
She was a performer, artist performer, creator and challenged boundaries in the musical world. She was an Mexican American artist who was both traditional and modern. She united both worlds and brought Tejano music to the forefront. The tragic loss of her life shattered her rise in popularity, and it is what happens often when a glowing, charming singer dies too young, it left many to mourn every potential that was not fully realized. In the following years, fans were inspired to work even harder to make sure that Selena's achievements would not be forgotten. Her tragic murder by a gunman triggered an outpouring of emotion in Latino communities similar to those who reacted to the deaths of Elvis Presley as well as John Lennon's. An enormously popular singer throughout Latino communities across North America her music crossed borders of culture to impact the lives of young as well as old. Selena may have been hailed by many as a Latina Madonna, however she's still an excellent example to follow. Selena's off-stage family values and involvement in AIDS awareness campaigns are exemplary.
